DHS or New York custody records show 6,947 individuals with ICE detainers were released from New York jurisdictions during the period beginning January 20, 2026.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has publicly stated that “Since January 20, New York’s failure to honor ICE detainers has resulted in the release of 6,947 criminal illegal aliens.” DHS published this exact figure in press releases dated December 1, 2025 and again on January 30, 2026; the number is an official DHS/ICE assertion. Verdict: True — DHS did make and publish this claim (the accuracy of DHS’s methodology for counting those releases is a separate question not resolved here).
