USDA will monitor lean trimmings supply and advise President on need for further action

The President issued a proclamation temporarily increasing the U.S. tariff-rate quota (TRQ) for lean beef trimmings by 80,000 metric tons for calendar year 2026 to boost domestic ground beef supply and help lower consumer prices. The additional quantity applies only to HTSUS codes 0201.30.5085 and 0202.30.5085, will be allocated entirely to Argentina, and will be released in four quarterly, first-come first-served tranches of 20,000 mt. The administration cited droughts, wildfires, a decline in the U.S. cattle herd, and Mexican import restrictions after New World screwworm detections as reasons for the action; the Secretary of Agriculture and the U.S. Trade Representative will monitor and implement related measures.
